Ok, what are the best vampire films out there that capture the atmos of the bram stoker novel? I'm not talking cyber-goth wank-fantasies like Underworld or Blade or emo lesbianism like Twiglet or whatever.
I ask because simply put I can not find a relatively modern vamp film that really gets me going. I live in hope that there will be a director that comes along and creates a fitting version of the classic tale. I don't think that Franky Ford Copulator's version really cuts it. The hammer films and other stuff is fine for it's time. I don't mind old horror as it has a great feel and atmos to it, but when will we create something modern that measures up? Or has this already happened and I missed it?
Apparently Let the right one in is supposed to be good, but its not exactly the same thing as this.

Those horror movies Dan mentioned are alright, especially House by the Cemetary, but I've never found traditional horror very satisfying, or high quality in terms of script or cinematography. The 'monster' at the end of House by the Cemetary ruins it.
Alien, in contrast, is incredibly atmospheric, and effective in terms of making you feel isolated and vulnerable. I'm not going to get on my soapbox about Alien 3/Alien Resurrection again, but I'll just say that the former has a very interesting directors cut in the quadrilogy.
Let the Right One in was interesting, and worth seeing, but for a vampire film that captures a great atmosphere how can you go wrong with either the original Nosferatu or Herzog's killer version?
And Dan, you're seriously suggesting that either Rambo 2 or Star Wars 2 is the best film of all time?!

Herzog's version? I wasn't aware of that. I must have a look at imdb.com now... Nosferatu is awesome. I just wish we could make something new that had the same effect but with a good modern progression to take it to the next level, if such a thing is possible. What annoys me about the francis ford coppola one is that they had a good cast and fucking squandered it all. Gary oldman as the count was a fucking great idea as he is such a good actor. (Whoever would have thought that getting a good actor to play a lead role could work?!)

I always find Zombie Flesh Eaters should be in the (un)holy Italian trinity! That and the Beyond are my favourite. I thought City of the living dead was a little less good, and I have yet to see House by the Cemetary. My favourite film is however Battle Royale.

Are there any decent Viking films? Like, actually good as opposed to the usual gash that Vikings are relegated to. Any brutal stuff that anyone knows of? I've rarely come across any...

Oh, and as a contender for best film ever...Jason and the Argonauts. Original obviously. Amazingly epic.

The bit with Achilles is proper scary! Do you mean the bit with Talos the giant bronze statue.. or have I blatantly got things mixed up? I still haven't seen Aguirre: Wrath of God. Is it rubbish?

Aguirre is superb, with Kinski in particularly deastating form. I'm in a big Herzog phase right now.
On the subject of vikings, how about The Vikings with Kirk Douglas? I can't enjoy it as i despise his face, but it's highly rated.

Don't watch Pathfinder, it's utter gash. And even though it has nothing to do with vikings, don't watch The Cottage either.

My local cinema is doing a 30th anniversary screening of Alien in a couple of weeks. I reckon I will take that chance to catch it on the big screen!

For Italian stuff you need the (un)holy trinity: The Beyond House By The Cemetary City of the Living Dead I've got to say that I've never really found horror films that scary. As a kid my parents were always really strict about what I could watch so I never saw any horror films until a friends dad rented out The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for us when we were about 14-15, which actually did really scare me. After that, nothing has ever bothered me. The only thing that really gets me is more normal stuff like the part in Hellraiser when the guy cuts his hand on the nail, that actually makes me feel sick which is weird! I thought because of that Saw would really appeal to me, but the first one is the only film I've ever walked out of. Good call on the Fulci. And also on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. For me, possibly the best horror film ever, and for me the one that really stands out as having a genuine element of terror to it. Favourite film... difficult... it's between Taxi Driver and Silence Of The Lambs.

Silence of the Lambs is hideously overrated!
Taxi Driver, on the other hand, is incredible. In my top 5 for sure.
