I could sworn I wrote a post here yesterday bumming on about Watain - Wolves Curse. It's a total fucking tune. I thought it would be when they played it last week, and every time I hear it now it makes me want to thrash.

I can't understand the hype around Lawless Dorkness at all. It's literally the worst album I've heard this year. Not a single interesting riff on the whole album (apart from when they play The Usurper in the last track), parts of it are utterly laughable (Beware Watain? Beware stupid lyrics more like it!) when it isn't being completely dull and uninspiring. How Erik can have the nerve to claim this piece of shit to be anywhere even close to Don't Break the Oath, is beyond me.

I don't get why everyone loves Wolves' Curse so much - the lyrics and riffs in it are naff. But it's the exception that proves the rule, with tracks like Reaping Death and Total Funeral being utterly killer.
The hype surrounding it is nonsense, though. "Black metal shall be reborn" - Fuck. Off.

INSERT BORING PREDICTABLE TWADDLE ABOUT WATAIN I'm not sure why you bothered to download it, since your opinion was clearly fixed beforehand! Maybe you just wanted to be able to say you'd listened to it in order to slate it, but it seems like a waste of 80 minutes of your life. There seems little point in arguing about it, but I'll say this: I think that LD is much more of a metal album with dark overtones than a black metal album. It's quite hooky, and yet has relatively complex and long songs. It's got plenty of great and memorable riffs and lead guitar, and a very powerful vocal performance. Erik is instantly recognisable. The lyrics in general are very well written, and the part you picked up on is hardly different to what tons of other metal bands do, in terms of self-referentialism. I like the hype that the band have generated around themselves, they're powerful manipulators of the media. I also like very much the confidence and arrogance, which is something that is sadly missing in many underground bands. If not the others, Erik at least has a strong personality, and in terms of being a performing metal band that's something much more desirable than faceless floor-staring idiots who just see themselves as another 'fan' who happens to be on stage. I hate the punk attitude that says anyone can do things, because it devalues talent and it produces too much crap.

I hate the punk attitude that says anyone can do things, because it devalues talent and it produces too much crap. That, I would agree with. Metal is too bogged down in sub-par music, and there are too many bands which are just fucking boring to watch live. Our opinions are just different, because I would say that Watain these days fall into this category. First time I saw them (with Dissection in Eddies) they seemed like such a breath of fresh air, they played passionately, and had an atmosphere which frankly, I've not seen rivalled today! The second time I saw them (with Celtic Frost), they were more like a pantomime act. Alton Tower's Ghost Train props, over elaborate corpsepaint, PINK fucking spikes, and most of all a totally lacklustre performance. As for Erik's voice, I think it's pretty generic. Damaar has a powerful vocal performance, Erik just sounds like someone who's voice isn't going to last many more tours. Musically, it struck me as nothing more than a bunch of riffs that weren't good enough for De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (but with added nu-metal bounce), a load of clichéd leads, boring drumming, and a couple of stolen riffs (I spotted Celtic Frost and Mercyful Fate). I don't doubt Watain's sincerity, I just think they're a band who had their good record. I actually checked it out because I wanted to see why everyone was proclaiming it to be such a good album. It just convinced me in my prior opinions that most metal fans are way too easily pleased.

Come, Reap is widely available on CD and tends to go for around a tenner. I played the album at mine to a bunch of pseudo-metal fans this weekend and they all loved it. I could write about how that annoys me and whatever but really, it's just great music that can be enjoyed on a casual basis by a fairly large number of people because it's very melodic and relatively unchallenging. What is interesting is that a lot of these same people scoffed when I suggested Blue Oyster Cult or Fleetwood Mac could go on afterwards... So pleased you referred to this incident, as I wasn't sure I should haha. Never mind, if someone likes it enough he'll just download it

I listened to Enforcer - Diamonds again and changed my mind, I quite like it, although I'd still have preferred something more like the debut. It just convinced me in my prior opinions that most metal fans are way too easily pleased. Too easily pleased for what? Too easily pleased to have the exact same taste in music as you?

Too easily pleased for what? Too easily pleased to have the exact same taste in music as you? No, that people will settle for any old shit. In my teens I always saw pictures of these people had thousands and thousands of cds, and thought it would be really cool. Then I realised, out of those thousands, I'd probably count about 10 of them as essential. Obviously though, my taste is the best, and if don't agree with me, you're a fucking idiot.
