I've tried with that band, but I really don't see the appeal. Some decent parts, lots of cheesy riffs and solos. If I wanted to listen to stuff like that I'd much rather listen to actual 70s rock.
NP: Watain - Lawless Darkness
Lots to say about this, but in general it's very good. I think that strangely the first two tracks are probably the weakest though, and it is a little overlong.

I think the great thing about The Devil's Blood is that it amalgamates a lot of what I like about bands like Jefferson Airplane and Fleetwood Mac and distills it into something quite brilliant. It's obviously very derrivative but it's also more than that; it sounds really vital to me and it has a sense of urgency that so few bands do.

I won't listen to the new Watain album on principle now after seeing that interview with Erik where he claims it's "as important" as Don't Break The Oath and Master of Puppets. Though I know I wouldn't like it if I went into it without bias. Stadium black metal.
Nick, you've pretty much hit the nail on the head with your description of The Devil's Blood. The better parts of Jefferson Airplane, meets "Then Play On" era Fleetwood Mac (and that is a KILLER album!), and UFO. Yet it's still original and has it's own sound. I've never understood why they're compared so often to Coven and Black Widow though. With the occult element removed, they've nothing at all in common with either of those bands. They really do seem to be a love em or hate em kind of band, from what I've heard of reports from Armageddon Fest, people have either said: "They were the best band of the night", or just "The only thing that impressed me was how big the singer's tits are." Haha. Anyway, I digress - I think TDB are way ahead of other bands doing the same thing at the minute, with the exception of Witchcraft, no-one else has really impressed me. Particularly the utterly awful Blood Ceremony.

Just to weigh in on the TDB debate, I would agree with Dan in that I can see no grounds for comparing them with Black Widow or Coven. I was expecting something quite different when I picked up the album, although I like it a lot. I do think it meanders in the second half but the last track is excellent and saves it. They seem to me to be becoming a bit of a trend thing at the moment but I think my view may be coloured as its based soley on a few internet messageboards rather than the music media as a whole..? I think Fleetwood Mac is a good comparison music-wise. I think their sound is more derivative than original but its a very engrossing and atmospheric record. Haven't heard the EP or anything before the album: I'll check them out.
Interesting that Blood Ceremony was mentioned as in many ways I think they're the opposite of TDB: lackluster songs, rubbish recycled riffs and a total lack of interest on any level. When the two bands are oput alongside it shows how good TDB are.

Yeah, sorry I worded those last sentences really badly. I meant that a lot of other bands in the same style don't really come close to TDB, especially Blood Ceremony who are as you say, lacklustre "occult" Jethro Tull clones.
I don't think it's wrong though to say that The Devil's Blood have become "trendy". Seems mainly to be amongst younger fans (probably because of the Watain connection) who aren't as familiar with the bands that influenced TDB.
Anyway Luke, I would say that Come Reap is pretty mandatory, much better than the album. Top notch song writing, and a killer Roky Erickson cover!

Does a band become trendy as soon as they become a bit more popular?

Yes.

My idea that maybe they were becoming a bit 'hip' was based on the fact that a lot of people who I wouldn't normally expect to be into this kind of sound were expressing their love for the band. I don't really know anyone hip though!
I'll try and hunt out a copy of Come Reap at the end of the month, if its better than the album I should really enjoy it.

Come, Reap is widely available on CD and tends to go for around a tenner.
I played the album at mine to a bunch of pseudo-metal fans this weekend and they all loved it. I could write about how that annoys me and whatever but really, it's just great music that can be enjoyed on a casual basis by a fairly large number of people because it's very melodic and relatively unchallenging. What is interesting is that a lot of these same people scoffed when I suggested Blue Oyster Cult or Fleetwood Mac could go on afterwards...

It's funny, often the veneer of metal is enough to convince 'metal heads' that music is ok. As if vague metal association lends the music credibility.

Moronic is more like it. Old Blue Oyster Cult and Fleetwood Mac kill, regardless of genre.

I think thats true. Bizarre how TDB, despite not being metal at all, are far more credible than Fleetwood Mac in certain circles. Cant say I agree about Blue Oyster Cult though. Bluegh.

What I've always found bizarre is that Clutch is an acceptable non-metal band that seem to feature in hallowed pages of august tomes such as Terrorizer. Now, I'm a big fan of Clutch but outside of Transnational Speedway League they bear no resemblance to metal at all. Anyway...
Nachtmystium - Instinct: Decay
I love the guitar tones and the lead work in this album. Definitely a modern classic for me, and makes me want Monument to Time End that much more.
