It's the age old thing, isn't it? You're listening to a cd and it's hitting all the right spots...apart from the fact the lyrics sound like they've been written by a 13 year old obsessed with bowel functions/dissecting womens' vaginas/the zombie apocalypse/horror films etc
Usually with death metal/gore/grind I can ignore the fucking awful words, the terrible rhymes etc. But sometimes, just sometimes, it strikes me as how stupid and inane it all is.

It really pisses me off, actually. I can't think of any specific examples but I've been irritated by some of the lyrics on Triune Impurity Rites.

It takes REALLY bad lyrics for me to be put off by them. 'Riflegun Redeemer' from the latest Asphyx album has a hint of 'could do better' about it's lyrics though. I don't want my Death Metal to feature anti-paedophile, anti-rape and anti-capitalist lyrics. The first two don't bother me as I'm neither pro- nor anti-, the last one annoys me because even though I agree with it, Doom/Death should not have lyrics about shooting your boss.

I usually don't bother reading the lyrics for gore / grind bands nowdays, as they tend to be pretty purile and boring. In the case of such bands I think the music can stand alone without needing to worry about cliched lyrical content as the vicals are unintelligable anyway. Its very rare that I find anything in this genre offensive, but when I do I normally skip the band from then on. In the grind genre Leng Tche have some of the best lyrics in my opinion, especially their first two records. Intelligent lyrics, or lyrics I can really connect to, make a big difference for me and thats one of the reasons I listen to less gore stuff nowdays. A good turn of phrase can elevate a good song onto a great one I think.

Wayne, as usual it's good to see a post from you that makes sense. I couldn't care less if bands sing about paedophilia, rape etc, not that I support these things, but I frankly don't give a shit. Terrible things happen, people need to deal with it. It seems these days though that you're seen as an arsehole if you don't get all up in arms about it and start screaming: "Hang the bastards!".
I've never really found anything that has ever offended me, even extreme racism just makes me laugh at the stupidity of it, but it wouldn't put me off listening to a band I enjoy. In fact, the only thing I would say really does put me off is the whole "thugs united" shit ala Hatebreed and co. That and the whole theological black metal thing (particularly when it's retarded and misinformed ala Necro Ritual) which I just think is fucking boring.
I think the only lyrics I've thought were really bad that may have put me off I liked were Officium Triste's lyrics, and I feel really bad saying that because when I met them a few years ago they were really nice guys. Like Wayne though, I don't think doom metal really fits lyrics about going into hiding from criminals.

A good turn of phrase can elevate a good song onto a great one I think. I could not agree more! I think it's worth putting all of this into context, mind you. A lot of the time I can't really make out the lyrics to a lot of the stuff I listen to (or sometimes they're in a foreign language), so they're clearly not an issue there. But on something like Triune Impurity Rites or The Sleep of Morbid Dreams, the vocals are relatively clean and really prominent in the mix, so it's really easy to hear them. Given that - that the lyrics are being put "on show", as it were - I do get irritated when I hear a really bad one. Perhaps not enough to ruin a song for me, but as Luke says, it can be the difference between a good song and a great one. One of the recent examples for me was in Radical Cut by Arcturus; fantastic song with some incredible vocal work, but some of the lyrics are gash and it just prevents it from being a truly great song in my opinion.

On the contrary, I think the lyrics to that song are simple, yet poetic and rather clever in their wordplay.
Are the lyrics you refer to on TIR perchance the ones about 'Semen drips from their cunts.' I can't remember the exact line, but I always found that a little too visceral for the nature of their music.

Very probably Bill. It's still a killer album but every now and then it sort of lets itself down.

You know what I mean We should compare dreadful lyrics, my first two bands had some of the worst lyrics/songtitles ever! "Shit yourself in public A humiliating stench, from your loosened bowels you shit in your pants." And songtitles such as: Brutal Blowjob Malevolent Discharge of Purulent Vaginitis Fistfuck Abortion Gangraping the Disabled ...the list sadly goes on. Beat that!

There used to be a band in Birmingham called Corpseshagger who would have to be in the running for terrible lyrics / songtitles. I'll have a look for their tape here in a bit and see if I can post them here.
