I was looking at so-called synthetic scales as i'm trying to learn guitar at present, and I stumbled across the info on wikipedia about quarter tones in scales and how the 12 tone equal temperament is not the only form of music. Other temperaments are still common-place outside of westernised society and some argue that they suit guitars better due to not trying to force them to perform well in all keys. I started googling and then found that there is a "metal" band that have decided to utilise the 24 tone system, which basically uses all the quarter-tones inbetween the semitones we're used to hearing. Unfortunately, and possibly somewhat predictably they use it to make this noise: www.mindriotrecords.com/man/manpreprodsnippets2009.mp3Which is basically lame, but still interesting that someone out there went to the lengths of having custom built instruments: Any bands that do this well out there? If so please stop hiding them and identify them IMMEDIATELY, you selfish bastards. Other than that this post is a diversion and ultimately an exercise in futility as it would take for-fucking-ever to figure out a decent way of utilising these scales properly and make something that actually sounds good.

Incidentally the guitarist here has lost a thumb so he/she has even less chance of making a decent racket.

It's very almost good. Then its shit. I can really echo your sentiments to hear a different band use quarter tones. This band is doing half tone hard core emocore stuff which is a shame. The only other one I can think of is a few solo singing breaks in Orphaned Land's Mabool album where they have some arab girl singing. It's bloody good.

Wow, that sounded EXACTLY how I expected it to. People need to realise that complex music can be made that sounds good rather than just copying either Messhugah or Dream Theater. Obviously it'll get you less groupies and scene points though.
