NP: Ignivomous - Death Transmutation Playing this loudly through my stereo at home, I was a bit disappointed. Playing it loudly on my iPod at work and I think it's brilliant. I must need new speakers, as the riffs did not come through very well at all. I do wish there was a slower, more deliberate side to the album though. When you've got something blasting into your ears it makes your brain focus on it which is harder to do relaxing at home sometimes, even with a crushing stereo. On the Entombed topic, both LHP and Clandestine are good albums, and best of the Swedish bunch after the first Dismember, but I find it hard to elevate them to 'great' status.

Oddly enough, I've found Death Transmutation to go down best when I've been out walking. I don't normally absorb music as well in that setting, but something about it really grabbed my attention then.

Weirdly, I'm finding Death Transmutation is incredibly distracting; that is to say, I'm enjoying it most when I'm supposed to be doing something else. It's definitely a grower, though - it's getting better with each listen.
NP: Funebrarum - The Sleep of Morbid Dreams
I love the change of vocal intonation in Perish Beneath; "As / You're lowered / Down / Into the grave!
I've also developed a massive throbbing hard-on for Anathema.

That album blew me away. Seeing em live made me realise it was more than just a band with a good studio album. They had moves live that frankly knock countless bigger acts into a cocked hat.

I want to hate Anathema with a passion for how they rubbish fans of their older stuff, it pisses me off so much when a band does that... but I just can't. They are easily one of my top 3 favourite bands. I've only seen them live once, and it was a completely flawless gig, apart from the fact that they tried to do Sleepless in their newer style, which really didn't work. They need to either bring back the growls, or let the past lie.

agreed on the whole past-bashing thing. It sucked when Paradise Lost did it. I really wanted to kick Nick Holmes face in when he whinged at that festival gig (can't remember if it was dynamo or wacken), saying he'd play it for the audience but it was shit anyway and they should move on. Fucking Duh!! Any band worth their salt doesn't have a problem busting out old material if they have it rehearsed.
I still can't fault anathema much at all.

I'd love to punch Nick Holmes. What a cunt! I'm so sick of PL saying they're making a return to form and then release another shit goth rock meets corporate Metallica album. Nick Holmes is another brilliant example of "shit outside the studio" as well, on that One Second live video he doesn't hit a single note in tune. They were crap after Gothic anyway, so I don't mind harbouring ill feelings towards them.
NP: Negative Plane - Et In Saecula Saeculorum ...and I'm ashamed to say I can't understand why I've ignored this for so long. It is FANTASTIC!

Warning - Watching From a Distance
The majesty of this album cannot be overstated.

Take into account the song is nearly 9 minutes long and they had a 40 min set. I did'nt see the point myself.... First a quick review f the bands set: An arse licky intro from Martin Walkyier a ponderous, boring ploddy song Name dropping the bands new drummer : Nick Barker the monotonous tedious song this time with some female vocals name dropping the drummer again some more dire, bland dirges interspersed with some uninteresting drivel The most ridiculous intro to any song ever : vince saying that the next song they are about to play can only be played by 3 (three) drummers in the whole country, obviously name dropping NB again as one of them, then they launch into a cover of Iron Maidens phantom of the opera!!!!!! the end

NP: Negative Plane - Et In Saecula Saeculorum ...and I'm ashamed to say I can't understand why I've ignored this for so long. It is FANTASTIC! I can agree to an extent. I've seen them play in recent years and in my opinion they're a seriously tight professional band even as far as vocals are concerned. They weren't before. For a long time Nick was shit live, and their goth metallica thing is a fair criticism. Personally I liked In requiem, because it sounded better than the direction Katatonia have taken recently, but haven't really come back to it that much, so really I suppose it's a little throwaway. Albums like that are usually made by corporate bands like the nu-metal or nu-tr00 (trivium/bullet for my valentine etc) lot and serve the same purpose as disposable pop music. Icon was full of out of tune vocal, but I've kind of gotten used to it over time. I think my fave of their stuff was Draconian Times as it was the most focussed of their sound, but then I really haven't listened to the classic era of Gothic or Lost Paradise. All of the above requires the patience to listen to goth rock. If you count moonspell in this bracket then I have limited patience with the genre. I wouldn't stretch much further than bands like that and Tiamat though.

He didn't write that, although it appears that he's trying to pass off that he did!

Nick Barker could be the element that could kill Anathema for me. Povey - your criticism means nothing though, you'd be over them like a horny dog if Ross Sewage played in them

Barker was just there temporarily, as their usual drummer couldn't make it. He kept his podgy self to himself.
