Burzum - Belus
Just finished listening to it.
First impressions are mixed.
'Leukes Renkespill (Introduksjon)' is an introduction... meh.
'Belus' Dod' is a real low key first song, a grower definitely.
'Glemselens Elv' is fantastic but the clean vocals take some getting used to.
'Kaimadalthas' Nedstigning' is similar but with even more clean vocals.
'Sverddans' is a great balckened punk song but has a bizarre solo right in the middle of it.
'Keliohesten' is a great straight down the line black metal song.
'Morgenroede' is another low key song with some incredibly basic drumming. At the 3 and a half minute mark it changes, with the guitars providing a mid paced trance groove with minimal percusion. It's probably the song which is most inkeeping with his earlier work. It runs seemlessly into...
'Belus' Tilbakekomst (Konklusjon)' which is a lengthy instrumental continuing the meditative feel of the previous song. It evokes one of his lengthy keyboard compositions but played on guitar with electronic percussion in the background.
Vocally, apart from the couple of songs with clean singing on, it's a good album. His vocals sound lower in timbre than previous work, more growl than shreik. The drums are simplistic but effective and the guitars are fuzzy at times but with some nice tremelo picking.
Overall it's a good comeback album, it doesn't feel like a 'safe' re-treading of previous work nor is it groundbreakingly different to his back catalogue.
