Enforcer - into the night.
The more I listen to this the more the vocalist begins to grate. He's not quite good enough to be given the space in the mix he's been allocated, and it really gets in the way of the music. There's only so much out of tune clean vocal I can tolerate.
Good Basslines tho.

Out of tune?! He's a very good vocalist!

Seconded, he sounds like a young Kai Hansen to me! Admittedly he's not totally pitch perfect, but it's good enough! I'd prefer to listen to a band who you'd know are that good live as on record than having spent loads of time in a studio polishing a turd.

James LaBrie can sod right off. No amount of pitch-perfect singing can make up for a lack of personality.
NP: Proclamation - Execration of Cruel Bestiality (Easily their most crushing and devastating work thus far! Can't believe just how good this album is.) Nastrond - Conquering the Ages (Every time I listen to this band I'm reminded of how unusual and underrated they are, given that they produced three very different but all very powerful full-lengths.) Sort Vokter - Folkloric Necro Metal (Horrible, but in the best way.)

James LaBrie can sod right off. No amount of pitch-perfect singing can make up for a lack of personality. Everything I have ever disagreed with you on is now forgiven! I had a friend who was one of those Dream Theater geeks who used to make me sit through hours of live videos and just talk about how complex their time signature changes were. Live James LaBrie is as you say utterly lacking in personality, his lyrics are dreadful, and he proves that outside the studio he's really not a very good singer at all! He looks like a cunt as well! JON ANDERSON CULT ETERNAL NP: Enforcer - Into the Night

NP: Ignivomous - Death Transmutation
Playing this loudly through my stereo at home, I was a bit disappointed. Playing it loudly on my iPod at work and I think it's brilliant. I must need new speakers, as the riffs did not come through very well at all. I do wish there was a slower, more deliberate side to the album though.

I'd say the last track more than makes up for how furious the rest of the album is! I seriously think so far Death Transmutation could be the metal album of the year for me. It gets better with each go, and I really love the fact that the guitars are somewhat inaudible in places. I can see why people wouldn't like it but I really like that chaotic feel to it. I'd be happy as Larry if the new Cruciamentum sounded half that heavy!!!

I think my problem is that I now compare every death metal album against Graves of the Archangels haha! As you say it's definitely a grower but I don't think I'm prepared to bestow such a lofty title upon it as you are, sir.
NP: Blasphemophagher - Nuclear Empire of Apocalypse
Beginning to wish I'd bought the new Embrace of Thorns instead, but this is still entertaining.

See, I'm no massive Dream Theater fan, but I'm certainly not anti- them either. However, LaBrie is one of the worst vocalists I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE. Trying to compare him to Olof Wikstrand is just horrid.

NP: Entombed - Clandestine
I think this album is quite underrated sadly. I know it's not as deadly as Left Hand Path(which is one of my favourite death metal albums) but it's still got great songs and it sounds crushing. The vocals are a little different to LHP though.

I've never been much of a fan of Clandestine. There's a few good tracks on it, but the riffs are still too rock based generally. The EP version of Crawl is a million times better! The album just lacks in the savagery of LHP, and the heavier side of the sound on Crawl.
NP: Pentacle - The Fifth Moon

I love Clandestine, its my favourite Entombed album. I agree with Dan's post above about the rock riffs, LHP been more savage and the EP version of Crawl, I just don't think any of that is a bad thing.

James LaBrie can sod right off. No amount of pitch-perfect singing can make up for a lack of personality. Indeed. I don't rate his live performance. I don't think he has a great deal going for him other than his studio stuff, and you've really got to be able to deal with all the soppy ooh-ooh wet vocals too. For every good bit DT manage in their songs they totally cheese it up with unnecessary extras and usually wreck any momentum they build with irrelevant 5-minute keyboard solo's. As for Enforcer, I'm still listening to it, so give me time. At pres the guys vocals just seem to get in the way a little. The first track on the album is definitely not happening for me.

Hmm, it's not as bad as I thought actually. He tends to pitch all his vocal lines around the same set of notes, but if I were to get pissy about that then I'd have to write off vocalists like Tom Araya, whom I used to dislike but have grown quite fond of over the years.
Aw, i'm conflicted now. :-)
